Level 2 Horticulture Course in Ilkeston. Classes run full-time at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus, over 36 weeks. You'll build practical skills and theoretical knowledge across a broad range of horticulture tasks, working both on-site and in a workplace setting. The course covers planting, pruning, propagation, turf care, and more. Entry requires a minimum of three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and/or Maths, or a Level 1 qualification at Merit grade. This level 2 horticulture qualification is awarded by City and Guilds.

This course is aimed at school leavers who wish to learn more about the broad range of skills required to work competently within the horticulture industry.You will be taught practical skills and theoretical background knowledge at College and will be expected to practise and develop these skills in the workplace.

Entry requirements

You need a keen interest in horticulture and should be willing to complete physical, outdoor practical tasks.You should have a minimum of three GCSEs at a grade 3 (D) and above, including English and/or MathsORA Level 1 qualification at a Merit gradeTo progress to Year 2 of the programme, you will need to achieve a Merit grade or above in Year 1.

  • You'll prepare ground and areas for planting.
  • You'll plant container-grown plants and trees.
  • You'll care for and maintain planted areas.
  • You'll prune deciduous spring-flowering shrubs and free-standing fruit trees.
  • You'll propagate plants from seed and by stem cuttings.
  • You'll maintain and repair turf.
  • You'll complete 150 hours of work experience in a horticulture setting.

How you will learn

You'll learn through a mix of practical, hands-on sessions on-site at Broomfield Hall and classroom-based theory. You'll also complete 150 hours of work experience to develop your skills in a real working environment. Assessment is through practical tasks and coursework across the units. There is also the opportunity to take NPTC assessments in strimmer, mower, and hedge cutter operation, with training provided at the college.
