About this course

Level 2 Women's and Men's Hairdressing Course in Kendal. Classes run at Kendal College, full-time during the day. The women's and men's hairdressing classes cover cutting, colouring, setting, blow-drying, shampooing, conditioning, men's hair cutting, and beard artistry. You'll work with experienced staff using up-to-date equipment. You'll need four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above to enrol. The course runs for 35 weeks. This City and Guilds Level 2 women's and men's hairdressing qualification prepares you to work as a hairdresser or barber. City and Guilds Diploma in Women's and Men's Hairdressing with certificate.

Who this course is for

On this programme you will study various aspects of hairdressing or barbering which will include shampooing, conditioning, setting and blow-drying, cutting, colouring, cutting men?s hair and beard artistry. If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, hairdressing or barbering could be your pathway to success. You will work alongside enthusiastic and experienced staff and use up-to-date facilities and equipment.

The department runs a variety of trips throughout the year, for example to Salon International in London and Birmingham Hair UK. Students also have the opportunity to compete in WorldSkills competitions.

This course usually takes place over three days. This course will develop your customer care, retailing and team working skills. You will learn how to handle money, multi-task and use your initiative. You will learn via practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and theory sessions.

You will be assessed using practical observation of your skills and oral questioning of your underpinning knowledge. Assessment will also be through the completion of written assignments, written tests and the production of a portfolio of evidence.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a 'C' grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

Entry requirements

For Level 2 you will need four GCSEs Grade 3 or above. You will need to show through records of achievement or qualifications that you have the commitment and ability to make the most of this opportunity, and cope with the practical skills.

You will need to be able to work with others as part of a team and communicate with clients and colleagues.

You'll learn through hands-on practical sessions in the salon environment at Kendal College, working on clients and models. Assessment is a mix of observed practical tasks and written work. You'll build a portfolio of evidence as you progress through the course. Staff will assess your practical skills directly in the salon setting.
