About this course

Level 1 CAD Parametric Modelling Course in Truro. Classes run at Truro College on weekday evenings, so you can fit study around your existing commitments. This is an introduction to Computer Aided Design using parametric modelling software. The course runs for 10 weeks part-time. You'll develop practical CAD skills that are useful in design, engineering, and manufacturing roles. A background in design or engineering can be helpful, but it is not required. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm this level 1 cad parametric modelling qualification is the right starting point for you.

Who this course is for

This is a certificated course that is aimed at individuals who want an introduction into the world of Computer Aided Design. Although this course is an introduction, individuals who have used the software have benefited extensively from the skills developed but also the advice and guidance given during the course.

This course would be ideal for people with a design or engineering background, although it is not essential. Some learners use this course as a pathway for career progression/ development or even a change of career.

You would need good basic IT skills, these skills will also be developed as part of the course.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn how to navigate and use parametric CAD software.
  • You'll create 2D and 3D models using parametric design tools.
  • You'll apply constraints and parameters to control model geometry.
  • You'll edit and modify designs using feature-based modelling techniques.
  • You'll produce technical drawings from your 3D models.
  • You'll understand the principles behind parametric design workflows.

How you will learn

You'll learn through hands-on practice in a classroom setting, working directly with parametric CAD software. Your tutor will guide you through exercises and provide advice during each session. Assessment is based on the work you produce during the course, demonstrating your ability to create and modify parametric models to the City and Guilds standard.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Truro College will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • CAD technician, producing technical drawings and models for engineering teams.
  • Design draughtsperson, creating detailed plans for manufacturing or construction.
  • Engineering design assistant, supporting product development using CAD tools.
  • Mechanical engineering technician, using CAD as part of a wider technical role.
  • Product design assistant, developing concepts and prototypes with CAD software.

What you could study next

After completing this Level 1 Award, you could move on to a Level 2 qualification in CAD or technical drawing to deepen your skills. A Level 3 qualification in Engineering Design or Product Design would suit those aiming for more senior technical roles. Some learners also progress into apprenticeships or employer-based training that builds on CAD competency.
