About this course

Functional Skills English Level 2. Study online at your own pace with JAG Training. This course takes around 6 months and fits around work, family, or other commitments. You'll develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and communication skills through real-world tasks. Functional Skills Level 2 is the recognised GCSE English equivalent, so when employers ask for GCSE English or equivalent, this qualification meets that standard. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm Level 2 is the right starting point, and your learning plan will be built around your needs.

Who this course is for

A key aim for Functional Skills English specifications is that they should enable the learner to develop confidence and fluency in, and a positive attitude towards, English. Learners should be able to demonstrate their competence in English by using it in real-world situations as well as demonstrating a sound grasp of basic English knowledge and skills.

Entry requirements

These qualifications are designed for learners aged 19 and above. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for these qualifications. However, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand a range of texts, including those used in everyday life and work.
  • You'll write clearly and accurately for different purposes and audiences.
  • You'll use grammar, punctuation, and spelling correctly in your writing.
  • You'll listen and respond to spoken language in formal and informal situations.
  • You'll speak clearly and communicate effectively in discussions and presentations.

  • You'll apply English skills in practical, real-world contexts.

How you will learn

You'll study online, working through reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks at a pace that suits you. Assessment is by externally set and marked exams covering reading and writing, plus a separate speaking, listening, and communication component. You'll need to complete all three components to achieve the qualification. JAG Training will guide you through the material and let you know how to book your assessments.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. JAG Training will confirm anything else you need before you start.
