If you're 19 or over, fees may apply depending on your prior qualifications and personal circumstances. You'll study animal health, behaviour, biological systems, wildlife, ecology, and animal nursing, combining theory with hands-on practical work in the college's purpose-built animal care centre. The course is equivalent to two or three A Levels.

Who this course is for

If you are passionate about animal care or animal science and are looking to progress onto university or work in the animal care industry, then this course is for you.

Equivalent to 2 or 3 A Levels, year 1 is a standalone qualification where students will either work towards the Advanced Technical Certificate or the Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management, subject to GCSE grades.

In the second year you will move onto the Extended Diploma, there are two options.

Entry requirements

Ideally at least 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 or A*-C including English and Maths or a Level 2 qualification, but this is subject to discussion at your interview. If you haven’t already achieved a GCSE grade 5 or grade C in English or Maths, then you will study either GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths alongside your other qualifications.

What you will learn

  • You'll study animal health and husbandry, covering how to care for a range of species.
  • You'll explore animal behaviour and communication.
  • You'll learn about biological systems relevant to animal science.
  • You'll develop knowledge of wildlife and ecology.
  • You'll cover animal nursing skills and animal training techniques.
  • You'll study business studies and employability skills relevant to the animal care industry.
  • You'll gain practical, hands-on experience in a purpose-built animal care centre.

How you will learn

You'll learn through a mix of classroom theory and practical sessions in the college's animal care centre. Assessment is 40% exam and 60% coursework. The course runs over two years. In year one you work toward either the Advanced Technical Certificate or the Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management, depending on your GCSE grades. In year two you progress to the Extended Diploma, choosing between a 12-unit or 18-unit route.
