Free Level 2 Groundworker Course. Work-based training at your workplace. You train on the job, applying your skills across real construction and civil engineering projects while you earn. Groundworkers are among the first trades on site, reading design specifications, preparing ground, and working alongside bricklayers, plant operatives, and engineers through to project completion. The course typically takes 18 months and is assessed through an End Point Assessment. A strong option if you're already working in a groundworker role and want a recognised level 2 groundworker qualification to show for it.
Who this course is for
Groundworkers are the first trade onto a construction and civil engineering site and they work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place. They continue their work throughout the construction phase, working with all on-site construction trades, such as bricklayers and plant operatives, up to and including the final completion activities of the project. Their work includes setting out and preparing the sub-surfaces ready for the structural work to begin, installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out the finished hard landscaping. Groundworkers are able to transfer between heavy construction and civil engineering sites as well as house building, commercial building and general building sites. Groundworkers work for all types of construction companies from small subcontractors to large main contractors.
What you will learn
You'll interpret design specifications and setting-out information on site.
You'll prepare ground and excavations ready for structural building works.
You'll work alongside bricklayers, plant operatives, and other construction trades.
You'll carry out drainage, kerbing, and paving activities.
You'll follow health and safety requirements on construction and civil engineering sites.
You'll support site completion activities through to handover.
How you will learn
This is a work-based qualification. You learn by doing your job as a groundworker, building a portfolio of evidence from your day-to-day work on site. Assessment takes place at the end of the programme through an End Point Assessment, which tests the knowledge, skills, and behaviours set out in the occupational standard. Your employer supports your development throughout the 18 months.
What you will need to bring
The centre will provide most materials. The Vocational Academy will confirm anything else you need before you start.
