About this course

Free Level 1 Horticulture Course in Smeeth, Ashford. Classes run at Craftworks College Muddy Wellies, a rural site focused on growing fruits and vegetables. You'll need some previous horticulture knowledge to join this level. An assessment at entry checks whether any support arrangements are needed. Over 11 months of full-time daytime horticulture classes, you'll work through six hands-on projects that build on each other across the year. Projects include designing decorative features, planning a plant sale, and growing produce for the public. You'll also have access to work experience with industry employers.

Who this course is for

This course is for students who have come into the college with prior Horticulture learning and experience or who have progressed with us from a lower- level Horticulture course.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have some previous Horticulture knowledge. Students will be assessed upon entry to see whether they need any access arrangements to cope with the demands of a level 1 course.

What you will learn

  • You'll plan and design decorative garden features.
  • You'll cultivate fruits, vegetables, and plants through the growing season.
  • You'll develop skills in preparing and maintaining growing spaces.
  • You'll learn how to sell plants and produce to the public.
  • You'll build knowledge of soil, growing conditions, and plant care.
  • You'll take part in work experience with horticulture employers.
  • You'll develop practical skills through project-based outdoor work.

How you will learn

Learning is project-based. You'll work through six projects across the year, each building on what you've already learned and working toward a finished product or feature. Classes are classroom and site-based, with hands-on outdoor work at the Muddy Wellies rural growing site. Employers get involved in projects and support relevant work experience. Assessment is ongoing through the projects rather than a single exam.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Craftworks College Muddy Wellies will confirm anything else you need before you start.
