About this course

Free Level 1 Hair and Beauty Course in Gateshead. Classes run at Gateshead College Baltic Campus, full-time during the day. You'll spend a year building practical skills across hairdressing and beauty therapy, covering skincare, hand care, make-up application, face painting, and how to present professionally in a salon environment. Training includes working on paying clients once your tutor has assessed you as ready. To apply, you'll typically need 4 GCSEs at grade C - E (or equivalent), preferably including English, or a relevant Level 1 qualification gained within the last three years.

Who this course is for

Studying both hairdressing and beauty therapy, you’ll work in our professional salon, Baltic Salon and Spa on paying clients. With a focus on hairdressing techniques, you’ll develop skills in colour enhancement, plaiting and twisting, cutting techniques, creative styling and the art of dressing. You’ll undertake a work experience placement one day a week to help develop your communication and creativity skills and have the chance to enter national competitions. This course will begin journey to showcase your creativity in preparation for Level 2 Hairdressing.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions and hands-on practical work in a salon environment. Your tutor will formally assess you before you carry out services on paying clients. Assessment is ongoing and covers both practical skills and knowledge-based theory. You'll be assessed by your tutor throughout the course.
