About this course

Free Level 1 Electrical Installation Course in Bradford. Classes run at Bradford College, full-time during the day. You'll spend at least half your time in the workshop doing practical tasks, and the rest in the classroom building the theory behind them. The course covers health and safety, wiring, terminations, circuit testing, and green skills including electric vehicle charging points. Maths and English are woven into practical and vocational tasks throughout the year. The course takes one academic year.

Who this course is for

Our City & Guilds level 1 course gives you an introduction to the health and safety, the construction trades and the skills required to secure a job in the electrical industry. Much like plumbing, you can choose to work for yourself, installing lighting and socket circuits in homes and commercial buildings, installing electric vehicle charging points and carrying out testing and commissioning procedures on new and existing installations. You will also take advantage of learning about green skills and sustainability with a big focus on smart technology, energy efficiency and the environment, there’s never been a better time to train as a modern electrician.

What you will learn

  • You'll follow health and safety practices used in the electrical industry.
  • You'll use tools and equipment for wiring and terminations.
  • You'll connect different types of electrical materials, components, and equipment.
  • You'll measure, mark out, and install wiring enclosures in the workshop.
  • You'll carry out basic circuit testing, including continuity, polarity, and insulation resistance.
  • You'll learn how electrical installation applies to domestic and commercial buildings.
  • You'll develop knowledge of green skills, including electric vehicle charging point installation.
  • You'll apply maths and English skills through practical, vocational tasks.

How you will learn

You'll learn through a mix of hands-on workshop sessions and classroom study. At least half the course is practical, working with real tools and wiring systems. Classroom sessions build the theory that supports your practical work. Assessment is through project-based tasks that combine vocational skills with applied maths and English. You'll be assessed on practical tasks such as terminating wiring systems and circuit testing, as well as your understanding of underpinning theory.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Bradford College will confirm anything else you need before you start.
