About this course

Free Level 1 Construction Skills Course in Birmingham. Classes run at Nova Training Birmingham. This full-time daytime course runs for 13 weeks and covers seven construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling, and plumbing. No previous knowledge or experience is required. You'll try each trade and get a clearer picture of which direction suits you.

Who this course is for

This qualification will provide you the ideal introduction to the construction industry and cover essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling and plumbing.

Entry requirements

Must be aged 16 to 18 and wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise core bricklaying techniques, including laying and bonding.
  • You'll work with timber in carpentry and joinery tasks.
  • You'll apply plaster to walls using standard finishing methods.
  • You'll use painting and decorating tools and surface preparation techniques.
  • You'll carry out construction operations tasks on site-related activities.
  • You'll cut and fix wall and floor tiles.
  • You'll be introduced to basic plumbing skills and pipework.

How you will learn

You'll learn through hands-on practical work in a classroom and workshop setting. Assessment is based on practical tasks and skills demonstrations across each trade area. You'll be assessed as you work through each trade, showing what you can do rather than sitting written exams.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Nova Training Birmingham will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Bricklayer's labourer: support bricklayers on residential and commercial sites.
  • Carpentry labourer: assist carpenters with timber work and site tasks.
  • Plastering labourer: mix and carry materials, prepare surfaces for plasterers.
  • Painter and decorator: apply finishes to walls, ceilings, and woodwork.
  • General construction operative: carry out a range of on-site support tasks.
  • Wall and floor tiler: cut and fix tiles in domestic and commercial settings.

What you could study next

Once you have your Level 1 construction skills qualification, you can move into trade-specific training. A Level 2 Diploma in a single trade (such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, or plastering) goes deeper into the skills employers look for. From there, a Level 3 NVQ in your chosen trade supports progression toward a CSCS skilled-worker card, which most construction sites require.
