About this course

Level 1 Construction Skills Course in Leicester. Evening construction skills classes run at Leicester College Freemen's Park Campus, three evenings a week over 32 weeks. The course is highly practical. You'll work in workshop facilities covering carpentry and joinery, plastering, brickwork, and painting and decorating. Units include health and safety in construction plus hands-on trade tasks such as fitting locks, fixing architraves, and applying plaster finishes. You'll build a portfolio of evidence as you work through each unit. There are no formal entry requirements.

Who this course is for

This one year course is for adults aged 19+ wishing to gain some understanding and practical experience of the variety of trades in the construction industry. The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks and is suited to individuals who are interested in starting property maintenance and or DIY enthusiasts. The course is highly practical in content with the majority of delivery taking place in bespoke workshop facilities. The following trade areas are covered: carpentry and joinery, plastering, brickwork, and painting and decorating. Final unit selection will be agreed upon with you before enrolment. There is a degree of flexibility in the subjects covered. You will need to undertake some distance learning from home or use the College's library facilities for further study. Advice, guidance, and support will be given.

Entry requirements

This qualification is for adults (19 plus).There are no formal entry requirements. Basic maths such as measuring and marking out plus calculating quantities will be required. Candidates will need to compile a portfolio of evidence. A basic understanding of hand tools and practical tasks would be useful. Emphasis will be on undertaking practical tasks to build confidence before completing formal assessment.

  • You'll fit locks, latches, architraves, and skirting boards
  • You'll apply plastering techniques, including preparing background surfaces and applying finish coats
  • You'll learn brickwork skills through practical tasks
  • You'll develop painting techniques and carry out painting and wallpapering work
  • You'll cover health and safety principles in construction environments
  • You'll measure, mark out, and calculate material quantities

How you will learn

Most of the course is practical, delivered in workshop facilities. You'll complete hands-on tasks in each trade area before moving to formal assessment. You'll also do some distance learning at home or using the college's library. Assessment is by portfolio of evidence, which you compile throughout the course. Final unit selection is confirmed with you before enrolment.

The centre will provide most materials. Leicester College Freemen's Park Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start. Note that a material fee of £100 applies for this course.
