This full-time daytime course covers seven construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling, and plumbing. No previous knowledge or experience is required. It runs for 13 weeks and gives you a broad introduction to the industry, helping you work out which trade suits you before committing to specialist training.

Who this course is for

This qualification will provide you the ideal introduction to the construction industry and cover essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling and plumbing.

Entry requirements

Must be aged 16 to 18 and wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise core bricklaying techniques, including laying and bonding.
  • You'll work with timber in carpentry and joinery tasks.
  • You'll apply plaster to walls using standard plastering methods.
  • You'll use painting and decorating tools and preparation techniques.
  • You'll carry out construction operations tasks on site-style exercises.
  • You'll cut and fix wall and floor tiles to a finished standard.
  • You'll be introduced to basic plumbing skills and pipework.

How you will learn

You'll learn through hands-on practical work in a workshop setting, trying each trade in turn. Assessment is based on practical tasks and skills demonstrations across the seven trade areas. There are no formal written exams. Your progress is assessed as you work through each trade, so your tutor can see what you can do.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Nova Training Wellington will confirm anything else you need before you start.
