About this course

Level 1 British Sign Language Course in Eastbourne. Classes run at East Sussex College Eastbourne Campus, part-time during the day. The course runs over 29 weeks and introduces you to how BSL is structured. You'll learn to hold simple everyday conversations, give and follow directions, and communicate with Deaf people using a range of words and sentences. There are physical entry criteria to be aware of before you enrol, covering sight, manual dexterity, and facial and bodily movement. The college can discuss individual circumstances before you join.

Who this course is for

British Sign Language is a very valuable skill and communication tool. Our Level 1 course will teach a range of simple words and sentences, so you can communicate effectively with deaf people. It is for 19 plus learners. If you are under 19, please contact the college for advice.The Level 1 BSL programme stipulates essential entry criteria for all candidates. The following should be considered before course commencement: �BSL Competence Standards include requirements for candidates to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and bodily movement to produce* and receive* BSL.� (Signature, BSL Qualification Specification 2025-2026)*Production = �use of� and reception = �recognition of� as defined within the BSL assessment specifications. This does not affect the College�s reasonable adjustment policy. If you would like to discuss any individual circumstances prior to joining the group, please contact the Adult Leisure Team leader. Please also note, BSL Unit assessments are videoed and timed.

How you will learn

Classes are taught in person at East Sussex College Eastbourne Campus. Assessment is carried out through recorded video, and assessments are timed. You'll be assessed on your ability to produce and receive BSL within the topics covered on the course. Your tutor will guide you through what to expect before each assessment.
