A minimum of a Grade 2 in GCSE English and Mathematics. You do not need to have any former experience of construction, although some would help. What you will learn

  • You'll learn safe working practices, PPE use, and hazard awareness in construction environments.
  • You'll identify and use bricklaying hand tools, materials, and consumables correctly.
  • You'll mix mortars to specification.
  • You'll measure and mark out work accurately using tapes, lines, and levels.
  • You'll lay courses of brickwork square and to line, working with stretchers, headers, and bond patterns.
  • You'll understand site and workshop preparation techniques.

How you will learn

Classes combine workshop practice with classroom theory. You'll develop practical skills through hands-on sessions in the college's workshop, supported by theory lessons covering construction principles and health and safety. Assessment is through practical tasks and portfolio evidence gathered throughout the course.

What you will need to bring

You'll need to bring steel toe-capped safety footwear to every session, along with a high-visibility vest or jacket, safety glasses, and gloves as specified by the college. Also bring a 5m tape measure, notebook, pens, pencils, a ruler, and a folder or binder for worksheets and portfolio evidence.
