About this course

Free GCSE English Language Course in Tower Hamlets. Classes run at Stepney All Saints School and Sixth Form, full-time during the day.

The course is designed for students who have previously achieved a Grade 3 or equivalent. Over one year, you'll study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and develop your reading, writing, and communication skills. The course targets a Grade 5 or above.

You'll finish with a GCSE in English Language, awarded by AQA.

Who this course is for

We have a proven track record of helping students achieve a Grade 5 and above in English at SASS.

The aim of the course is to develop the students’ understanding of English Language. Students cover a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as experiencing a range of teaching styles to help their understanding.

The course is specifically designed for students who have previously achieved a D (Grade 3) or equivalent and we have an experienced team dedicated to help students make the most of their potential.

Students taking the GCSE English Language Mature will have additional classes after school for at least one hour a week to develop their exam skills.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements for all Level 2 vocational courses are mainly ‘D’ grades (grade 3/4) for at least 5 GCSE subjects.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and analyse fiction texts, exploring language, structure, and meaning.
  • You'll read and analyse non-fiction texts, comparing viewpoints and perspectives.
  • You'll write for different purposes and audiences, including descriptive and narrative writing.
  • You'll write to present a viewpoint, using rhetoric and persuasive techniques.
  • You'll develop your ability to evaluate a writer's choices and their effect on the reader.
  • You'll practise spoken language skills, including presenting and responding to questions.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based lessons covering a range of teaching styles. Assessment is by two written exams at the end of the course. There is no coursework, but a spoken language endorsement is assessed separately and reported on your certificate. Both exam papers test reading and writing skills across fiction and non-fiction texts.
