About this course

Free Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics. Study online at your own pace, fitting learning around your life. The course runs over 12 weeks. It is free for learners aged 19 or over with the right to residence in the UK, including asylum-seekers. You must not be on a student visa or overseas student status.

This Level 1 functional skills maths course covers number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, geometry, and basic statistics. It is a recognised GCSE maths alternative for work and further study. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm the right level for you.

You'll finish with a Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics at Level 1.

What are Functional Skills? Functional Skills are recognised GCSE alternative qualifications, with a Functional Skills Level 2 course being equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (C). However, there are some instances where functional skills Level 2 is not considered equivalent, such as for becoming a teacher, so do check before enrolling.

Why do I need Functional Skills? Functional Skills are essential as they equip you with the practical literacy, numeracy, and digital skills required for everyday tasks, employment, and further education. These skills enable better communication, problem-solving, and effective use of technology, making you more competent and confident in your personal and professional lives.

What you will learn

  • You'll work with whole numbers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • You'll calculate with fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • You'll use ratio and proportion in practical contexts.
  • You'll measure length, weight, capacity, and time.
  • You'll interpret and use simple charts, tables, and graphs.
  • You'll apply geometry skills, including area, perimeter, and angles.
  • You'll solve real-world maths problems using these skills.

How you will learn

You study online, working through tasks and activities at your own pace. Assessment is by a written exam set by Pearson Edexcel. The exam tests your ability to apply maths skills to everyday situations. If you do not have access to a computer or wi-fi, Croydon Adult Learning and TraininG can loan a Chromebook and a pre-loaded wi-fi dongle for the duration of the course.

What you will need to bring

When you enrol, bring one of the following: a UK birth certificate, a UK or EU passport, or an Indefinite Leave to Remain Resident Permit. Croydon Adult Learning and TraininG will confirm anything else you need before you start.
