Free Entry Level 1 Independent Living Skills Course in Dunstable. Classes run at TCHC Dunstable GAPS Centre, full-time during the day. This free independent living skills course runs for 130 hours and covers the practical skills and knowledge you need to live more independently. You'll study topics including personal safety, handling money, healthy eating, understanding relationships, and contributing to your community. The course also includes Functional Skills English and Maths. You'll need to be aged 16 to 18 years old, or aged 16 to 24 years old with a current Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Who this course is for
Young people aged 16-18 (and 16-24 with an EHCP) who would like to gain a qualification in Skills for Independent Living.
What you will learn
You'll develop skills for starting out on a new learning experience and understanding how you learn.
You'll practise following instructions and working as part of a group.
You'll explore personal safety and how to keep yourself healthy.
You'll build knowledge of healthy eating and using social and leisure facilities.
You'll learn how to handle money in everyday situations.
You'll develop an understanding of relationships and contributing to your community.
You'll complete Functional Skills English and Maths alongside the main course.
How you will learn
You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at the centre. Learning covers personal and social development, employability, independent living skills, and Fundamental British Values. There are also sessions on mental wellbeing and opportunities for work experience. Assessment is built into the course through the activities and tasks you complete throughout your learning.
