About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Sheffield. Daytime classes run at CTS Training. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm Entry Level 1 is the right starting point, and the centre will use it to plan your learning. The course covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening at Entry Level 1, and takes around 100 hours to complete. It is open to 16 to 19 year olds, and to those aged 19 to 24 who hold an Education, Health Care Plan.

***RECRUITING NOW for 2026/2027*** - Are you aged 16-19? Or 19-24 with an Education, Health Care Plan, have evidence that you legally reside in the UK, are you a school leaver who didnt quite get the grades when you left school at or before year 11 or sixth form or college? No matter how well you did prior, we can help you get where you want to be on a CTS Study Programme to help you gain the qualifications & confidence you may need for the future.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand short, simple texts on familiar topics.
  • You'll write simple sentences using basic punctuation and spelling.
  • You'll listen to and follow straightforward spoken information.
  • You'll speak clearly to communicate basic needs and information.
  • You'll identify the main points in everyday written material such as signs, forms, and notices.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at CTS Training, with tutor-led sessions covering reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Assessment is through tasks and activities set at Entry Level 1. These are marked against the City and Guilds Functional Skills English specification. Your tutor will track your progress throughout the course.

The centre will provide most materials. CTS Training will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Once you complete Entry Level 1, you can move on to the Functional Skills Qualification in English at Entry Level 2, then Entry Level 3. From there, Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2 are the natural next steps. Level 2 is the recognised equivalent to a GCSE English pass, which many employers and further education courses ask for. Each level builds directly on the one before.
