About this course

Free BTEC Level 3 Music Course in Saint Helens. Classes run at Rainford Sixth Form, full-time during the day. This level 3 BTEC music qualification develops your performing, composing, and music technology skills alongside transferable skills valued by universities and employers. You'll need a Level 2 Merit or above in BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice, or a grade 5 or above in GCSE Music. You should also play an instrument or sing to at least Grade 4 standard. The course runs for one month.

Who this course is for

If you choose to study music, you will be developing your musical, technical and listening skills as well as many transferable skills such as self-evaluation, practice and review which are highly regarded by higher education and employers in many fields. Careers specifically related to music include performing, composing, teaching, sound engineering, music production and music promotion and administration.

Entry requirements

Ideally you will have a Level 2 Merit or above in BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice or a Level 5 or above in GCSE Music. You should be able to play an instrument or sing to at least Grade 4 standard and have some knowledge of music technology. This is a very practical course and so you must be willing to practise regularly both on your own and with others.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop your performance skills on your instrument or voice.
  • You'll build composing skills, creating original music across different styles.
  • You'll strengthen your listening and music analysis skills.
  • You'll gain practical experience with music technology and production tools.
  • You'll practise self-evaluation, reviewing and improving your own work.
  • You'll explore areas including sound engineering, music promotion, and administration.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical workshops, performance sessions, and studio-based activities in the classroom. Assessment is through coursework, practical assignments, and portfolio evidence rather than written exams. You'll be expected to practise regularly, both independently and collaboratively with other students. The course is highly practical, so active participation in group and solo work is central to how you progress.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Rainford Sixth Form will confirm anything else you need before you start. You should be prepared to practise your instrument or voice regularly outside of class time.
