Who this course is for

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Music Performance is intended to be

an Applied General qualification. It is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education

through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to

employment, possibly in the music sector or the creative sector as a whole. The qualification

is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to provide a coherent course of study covering

both performance and the music industry.

Learners taking this qualification will study three mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Practical Music Theory and Harmony
  • Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry
  • Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance.

Learners choose one optional unit. These have been designed to support progression to more

specialist music courses in higher education and to link with relevant occupational areas, such as:

  • composing music
  • improvising music
  • solo performance.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSE’s at level 6 from five separate subjects, including a 6 in GCSE music. Students will also need to have an average of 5.5 points or more from their GCSEs. Students should ideally be working towards graded examinations in their chosen instrument.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop performance skills on your chosen instrument or voice.
  • You'll study music theory and how it applies to composition and performance.
  • You'll explore the music industry and the wider creative sector.
  • You'll analyse and respond to a range of musical styles and genres.
  • You'll create and present performances to an audience.
  • You'll build skills in rehearsal, preparation, and self-evaluation.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom sessions, practical performance work, and guided study at Maghull High School. Assessment is a mix of internally assessed units, marked by your teachers, and externally assessed components set and marked by Pearson Edexcel. Internally assessed work includes portfolios, recordings, and written tasks. External assessments may include set tasks or exams. Your teachers will give feedback throughout to help you develop your work.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Maghull High School will confirm anything else you need before you start. You should be actively working toward graded examinations on your chosen instrument, so access to that instrument for practice outside school is strongly recommended.
