About this course

Free BTEC Level 3 Music Course in Burnley. Classes run at Burnley College, full-time over two years. This is a Pearson Edexcel BTEC qualification focused on music technology and production, not traditional instrument-based study. You'll develop skills in DAW production, studio recording, and live events across two years of project-based learning. The first year builds core music technology skills. The second year gives you more independence to specialise and build a professional portfolio. Entry typically requires five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above, including English and Maths, or a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Who this course is for

Develop your raw talent into what you want to achieve. This course is based on the practical skills of creating and performing music, while also gaining knowledge and understanding of the theory, technology, and industry practices in music. The course allows a great deal of freedom in the music you choose to perform and compose. Choose your preferred genre of music whilst exploring a wide selection of relevant and interesting music and music technology related topics. The most employable individuals in this sector are adaptable and have a range of musical skills rather than just one specialism. Year 1 is focussed on music skills development (performing as a musical ensemble, creating musical material and using music styles) whilst also understanding the music industry. Year 2 enables students to specialise in their chosen area of music by working on a collaborative music project whilst preparing for higher education and employment by developing a personal music profile.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including English and Mathematics or a relevant Level 2 qualification. GCSE in Music is desirable, along with music theory and grades in a chosen instrument. You will be required to attend an audition evening where you will have the opportunity to showcase your music ability, potential and passion for your subject.

What you will learn

  • You'll produce digital music using DAW software, including MIDI input, audio editing, and sound design.
  • You'll apply audio effects and develop your skills in mixing multi-track recordings.
  • You'll set up, operate, and manage sound equipment for live music events as part of a production team.
  • You'll capture professional multi-track recordings in a studio environment, including microphone placement and working with artists.
  • You'll build a professional portfolio of work through self-directed projects in year two.
  • You'll develop specialist skills for specific sectors of the music industry.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, project-based work in a classroom and studio setting. Projects build your skills progressively before you move into industry-focused, coursework-based assessments. There are no written exams. Assessment is based on the work you produce across your projects, reflecting how the music industry actually operates.
