About this course

Level 1 ESOL Skills for Life: Reading Course in Richmond upon Thames. Evening and daytime classes run at Parkshot, part-time over 13 weeks. Before you start, you take a short assessment to confirm this is the right level for you. Parkshot offers courses from Pre-Entry through to Level 2, so you'll be placed at the level that suits you. You'll develop your reading skills in English, including skimming and scanning texts and understanding different types of written material. This is a practical esol skills for life: reading qualification that shows employers your English reading ability.

Who this course is for

Do you want to improve your reading skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification? This 3-month course will help you build confidence in reading, develop skimming and scanning skills, and understand different types of texts. You'll learn from experienced teachers in a supportive, adult-only environment. Improving your English and gaining an ESOL certification is a great way to enhance your CV and demonstrate your language skills to employers.

Entry requirements

You must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date. Before you start this course you need to take Step into English to help you choose the right level of Reading course. We have courses at all levels of the Adult ESOL Curriculum from Pre-Entry (for complete beginners) and Entry Level up to Level 2. We will help you find the correct level for you before you start your course.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop your ability to read and understand different types of texts.
  • You'll practise skimming and scanning to find information quickly.
  • You'll build your understanding of how written English is structured.
  • You'll learn to identify the main points and details in a text.
  • You'll improve your reading skills for everyday situations, including work and study.

How you will learn

You'll study in a classroom at Parkshot with experienced teachers in an adult-only group. Learning is practical and focused on reading skills. Assessment is through a formal reading exam set by Ascentis. The exam tests your ability to read and understand written texts at Level 1.

The centre will provide most materials. Parkshot will confirm anything else you need before you start.
