About this course

Level 5 Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare Course. Work-based training at your workplace. You need to be working as a Deputy or Manager in a residential childcare setting, or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with those roles. This level 5 leadership and management for residential childcare qualification is the required qualification for managers working in children's homes under the children's homes regulations introduced in April 2015. You'll cover leading and managing a team, group living, supporting children and young people, and implementing policies and procedures. The course typically takes 12 months.

Who this course is for

This qualification is part of the new children’s homes regulations which came into force in April 2015. It has replaced the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (Children and Young People’s Residential Management Pathway) as the required qualification for those working in children’s homes.

Entry requirements

You will need to be working in the role of Deputy or Manager in an appropriate setting, or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles to be able to study for the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England).

What you will learn

  • You'll develop skills in leading and managing a team in a residential childcare setting.
  • You'll learn how to manage group living for children and young people.
  • You'll understand how to lead practice that supports the wellbeing and development of children and young people.
  • You'll learn how to implement policies and procedures relevant to residential childcare.
  • You'll cover optional topics suited to specific residential childcare and respite care settings.

How you will learn

Learning is delivered mainly through an online environment. You'll work through the qualification while carrying out your role as a Deputy or Manager. There are no requirements for observation of workplace skills. Assessment is based on your ability to address complex, broadly defined problems, plan and develop courses of action for yourself and others, and demonstrate understanding of different approaches and the reasoning behind them.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Achievement Training will confirm anything else you need before you start.
