This therapies for cancer and life limiting conditions qualification prepares qualified complementary therapists to work in healthcare settings with clients who have cancer or other life limiting conditions. To enrol, you need a Level 3 complementary therapy qualification, Level 3 anatomy and physiology knowledge, and proven healthcare work experience.

Who this course is for

This qualification aims to prepare you to work within a healthcare setting providing complementary therapies for clients who are suffering life limiting conditions or who are critically frail. Complementary therapies are widely available to people with cancer and increasingly to patients with a range of long term medical and life limiting conditions. These therapies are delivered alongside orthodox treatments, often within the healthcare setting, with the aim of providing psychological and emotional support through the relief of symptoms.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for registration on this qualification, it is a requirement that you are a qualified complementary therapist holding a Level 3 (or equivalent) qualification in at least one of the three main disciplines of complementary therapies - aromatherapy, reflexology and massage. Anatomy and physiology knowledge at Level 3 or equivalent is a mandatory requirement. Students must also have proven work experience in a Health Care setting.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop skills in delivering complementary therapies, including aromatherapy, reflexology, and massage, within a healthcare environment.
  • You'll learn how to adapt treatments safely for clients with cancer or other life limiting conditions.
  • You'll understand the psychological and emotional needs of critically frail or seriously ill clients.
  • You'll study how complementary therapies work alongside orthodox medical treatments.
  • You'll learn to assess client suitability and adapt your practice to complex health presentations.
  • You'll build knowledge of the healthcare setting, including professional boundaries and multi-disciplinary working.

How you will learn

Learning takes place in the classroom at Peter Symonds College Stoney Lane Campus, with practical elements reflecting real healthcare practice. Assessment is through a combination of practical observations, written assignments, and portfolio evidence demonstrating your competence with clients who have cancer or life limiting conditions. The part-time daytime timetable allows you to continue working alongside your studies.
