About this course

Level 4 Counselling Practice Course in Grays. Classes run at South Essex College of Further and Higher Education, part-time during the day, six hours per week over two years. This counselling practice course is the final stage before working as a qualified counsellor. You'll develop counselling skills across a range of modalities, including Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches. The course includes 100 hours of voluntary placement, giving you direct client experience. Entry requirements include a Level 3 Counselling Skills qualification and GCSE grade C/4 or Functional Skills Level 2 in English.

Who this course is for

This programme is the final step in becoming a qualified counsellor.

The focus of this programme is to continue to develop your self-awareness, challenge any stereotypes and pre-conceived notions, to develop your counselling skills and to support you while you undertake your 100-hours of voluntary placement. We continue to explore ethical and legal requirements for counsellors alongside an understanding of procedural issues for agency work.

This is a part time course, 6 hours per week (one full day in college) and also requires the learner to undertake personal therapy, 100-hours voluntary placement and supervision in line with BACP requirements. Assessment is through a range of techniques which will include essays, presentations, portfolios of evidence, case reviews, role plays and an exam at the end of the 2nd year of study.

Your suitability for the course will be determined against AIM candidate entry requirements. You will need to attend an entrance interview including submission of an essay

What you will learn

  • You'll study Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy theory.
  • You'll explore ethical and legal requirements for counsellors, including the BACP ethical framework.
  • You'll build self-awareness and challenge your own assumptions and practice.
  • You'll complete 100 hours of voluntary placement with real clients.
  • You'll study topics including sex and sexuality, trauma, and fitness to practice.
  • You'll learn how to work within agency settings, including procedural and supervision requirements.

How you will learn

Learning is classroom based, six hours per week. You'll be assessed through essays, presentations, portfolios of evidence, case reviews, and role plays. There is also an exam, with an additional exam fee of approximately £140 at enrolment. Supervision sessions support your development throughout the course, alongside your 100-hour voluntary placement. A DBS check is required, costing £65. Personal therapy of up to 30 hours is also part of the programme.

You will need to arrange a DBS check (£65) and up to 30 hours of personal therapy as part of the course requirements. You will also need to provide contact details for your Level 3 Counselling Skills tutor.
