About this course

Level 3 Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems Course in Paignton. Classes run at South West Energy Centre over three days. The course covers the installation and maintenance of heat pump systems, focusing on non-refrigerant circuits across air source and ground source technologies. It suits heating professionals looking to add heat pump work to their skills. The installation and maintenance of heat pump systems classes run part-time during the day.

Who this course is for

The LCL Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non Refrigerant Circuits) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for heating professionals who work with air source and ground source heat pump technologies. The qualification has been developed in partnership with industry bodies including the Heat Pump Association, MCS, and heating sector stakeholders to ensure it reflects current standards and best practice. This programme is specifically aimed at installers and maintenance engineers experienced in wet central heating systems, equipping you with the knowledge and skills required to install, commission, service and maintain heat pump systems where refrigerant circuits remain sealed. The qualification excludes the handling of refrigerants (which requires a separate F-Gas qualification) but still covers all relevant system design and operational knowledge for heat pump installations. This is a combined course for both Air and Ground source systems.

What you will learn

  • You'll understand how air source and ground source heat pump systems work.
  • You'll learn how to install heat pump systems on non-refrigerant circuits.
  • You'll learn how to carry out maintenance on heat pump systems safely.
  • You'll understand current industry standards and best practice for heat pump installation.
  • You'll learn how to commission and check heat pump systems after installation.
  • You'll understand the requirements set by industry bodies relevant to heat pump work.

How you will learn

Learning takes place in a classroom setting over three days at South West Energy Centre. You'll cover theory and practical knowledge through tutor-led sessions. Assessment is based on the requirements of the Level 3 Award, and the centre will confirm the specific assessment methods before you start.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. South West Energy Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Heat Pump Installer: install air source and ground source heat pump systems.
  • Heating Engineer: service and maintain domestic and commercial heating systems.
  • Renewable Energy Technician: work across low-carbon heating technologies.
  • Plumbing and Heating Engineer: combine heat pump work with broader heating services.
  • MCS-registered Installer: work on MCS-certified heat pump installations.

What you could study next

If you want to work on refrigerant circuits as part of heat pump installations, you'll need an F-Gas qualification such as the City and Guilds Level 2 Award in F-Gas and ODS Regulations. For broader renewable energy work, a Level 3 Award in Renewable Energy Technologies covers additional technologies. MCS certification is the recognised route for installers working on government-backed schemes, and your employer or training centre can advise on the steps toward that.
