About this course

Level 2 Skin Cancer Awareness for Non-Healthcare Professionals Course in Truro. Classes run at Truro College, as a one-day daytime session. Hair, beauty, and wellbeing professionals often see areas of skin that clients themselves cannot easily check. This course teaches you to recognise the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and to guide clients toward their GP or public health information. It covers how to identify changes in moles, lesions, and skin tone, and how to raise concerns with clients sensitively. The level 2 skin cancer awareness for non-healthcare professionals qualification is assessed through a short written test.

Who this course is for

This course has been designed to enable beauty therapists, complementary therapists, nail technicians, sports massage therapists, fitness instructors, hairdressers and barbers to recognise the signs and symptoms of skin cancer. You will be able to alert clients to changes in their skin and sign-post clients to public information and their GP. Professionals in hair, beauty and wellbeing industries work closely with clients and in many cases have sight of areas of skin which may not be easily visible to the client. Public awareness of skin cancer has never been higher and yet skin cancer remains the fastest growing cancer in the UK, especially amongst young people. The chances of a positive outcome can be dramatically increased with early diagnosis. This qualification will enable hair, beauty and wellbeing professionals to gain the appropriate knowledge and communication skills required to provide non-diagnostic, professional advice and information to clients in a discrete, empathetic and confidential manner.

What you will learn

  • You'll identify the signs and symptoms of common skin cancers.
  • You'll recognise changes in skin that may need medical attention.
  • You'll understand which areas of skin clients may not easily see themselves.
  • You'll learn how to raise concerns with clients in a clear, calm way.
  • You'll know how to signpost clients to their GP or relevant public health information.
  • You'll understand your role and its limits as a non-healthcare professional.

How you will learn

The course is delivered in the classroom over one day. You'll cover the subject through taught sessions and guided discussion. Assessment is through a short knowledge-based test or written questions to confirm your understanding of skin cancer awareness and client referral. Truro College will confirm the exact assessment format before you attend.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Truro College will confirm anything else you need before you start.
