About this course

Level 2 Garden Design Course. Study online at your own pace, fitting learning around your other commitments. The course runs over one year and is delivered by Capel Manor College.

You'll split your time between horticultural theory and drawing and design. Three specialist units cover the core skills of a garden designer, from understanding plants and landscapes to producing design drawings. Entry requires a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 5 or above, and confidence using a computer will help.

You'll finish with a Level 2 Certificate in Garden Design.

Who this course is for

This course will focus on drawing and design, and you will study three specialist units. You will spend half the day focusing on horticultural theory, with the other half focusing on drawing and design.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 5 and above (A* to C). Level 1 Pass from one of the introductory courses and relevant prior learning or practical experience gained in a professional environment would be useful but is not a course requirement. A keen passion for and interest in garden design, landscapes and horticulture is a must. Confidence in the use of computers, the internet and standard office software will help you with this course.

What you will learn

  • You'll study horticultural theory, including plants, soils, and growing conditions.
  • You'll develop drawing skills used in professional garden design.
  • You'll learn how to plan and design garden layouts.
  • You'll explore landscape principles and how they shape design decisions.
  • You'll practise producing design drawings to a professional standard.
  • You'll build knowledge of materials, structures, and features used in gardens.

How you will learn

You'll study online through three specialist units, spending roughly equal time on horticultural theory and on drawing and design. Learning is self-paced, so you work through material at a speed that suits you. Assessment is based on the work you produce across the units. You may be required to attend an interview as part of the enrolment process.
