About this course

Level 2 Felling Small Trees up to 380mm Course in Ilkeston. Classes run at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus over one intensive week. UK legislation requires anyone carrying out chainsaw felling operations on small trees (with a basal diameter under 380mm) to hold an appropriate qualification. This felling small trees up to 380mm course prepares you to meet that legal requirement. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a Certificate of Competence in the Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting before you start. You'll cover health and safety law, practical felling techniques, and safe removal of hung-up trees.

Who this course is for

Current legislation states that all those required to undertake chainsaw felling operations on small trees (trees with a basal diameter of less than 380mm) must be appropriately trained and qualified. The training course offered by DCG equips candidates to undertake an industry-compliant Certificate of Competence assessment.

Entry requirements

You will need to be aged at least 18 and you must hold a Certificate of Competence in the Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting.Verification of this must be produced prior to the start of the course.

What you will learn

  • You'll understand the legislation and health and safety rules that govern tree felling operations.
  • You'll develop practical skills to fell small trees safely and efficiently using a range of cuts for different scenarios.
  • You'll learn how to safely remove a hung-up tree.
  • You'll practise breaking down a felled tree and cross-cutting it into specific timber lengths.
  • You'll apply safe working practices throughout chainsaw felling operations.

How you will learn

Training is delivered on-site at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus, combining classroom instruction with practical, hands-on chainsaw work. Assessment is by a City and Guilds Certificate of Competence practical assessment. You'll need to demonstrate competence in felling, hung-up tree removal, and cross-cutting to pass. You must bring verification of your existing Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting Certificate of Competence before the course begins.

What you will need to bring

You must produce your Certificate of Competence in the Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting before the course starts. Candidates are required to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus will confirm the full PPE requirements and anything else you need before you start.
