About this course

Level 2 ESOL Skills for Life: Reading Course in Derby. Classes run at Derby College St James' Centre, part-time during the day. The course runs over 19 weeks and is designed for people whose first language is not English. Before classes start, you'll have an interview and an initial assessment so you're placed at the right level. You'll build your English reading skills to a standard that employers and colleges recognise as equivalent to a good level of everyday English literacy. These esol skills for life: reading classes cover the reading skills you need for work, study, and daily life in the UK.

Who this course is for

If English is not your first language and your English skills are stopping you making progress in your life in the United Kingdom, an ESOL course is a good choice for you. You may be newly arrived in the United Kingdom, have not studied English before, or perhaps only studied English for a few years in your home country.

Entry requirements

Before classes start, you will have an interview and take an initial assessment. Based on your skills, we will place you in the correct level class to help you progress quickly and smoothly.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand a range of everyday texts, including letters, notices, and forms.
  • You'll identify the main points and supporting detail in written material.
  • You'll understand how texts are organised and how language is used for different purposes.
  • You'll read and respond to texts used in workplace and community settings.
  • You'll develop the vocabulary you need to read confidently in English.
  • You'll practise reading at the pace and accuracy expected at Level 2.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at Derby College St James' Centre, with a mix of guided reading activities, group work, and individual tasks. Assessment is through a formal reading test set by City and Guilds. Your tutor will use your initial assessment to plan your learning and track your progress throughout the 19 weeks.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Derby College St James' Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.
