About this course

Level 2 Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting Course in Ilkeston. Classes run at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus, part-time during the day. UK legislation requires anyone using a chainsaw for work to hold an appropriate qualification. This chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting course runs over one week (12 hours total) and covers the legal requirements, safe maintenance procedures, and practical cross-cutting operations. You must be at least 18 years old to enrol. Ideally you'll have some experience in the industry.

Who this course is for

Current legislation requires those whose work involves the use of chainsaws to be adequately trained and qualified. The training course offered by Derby College Group equips the candidate to undertake an industry-compliant ‘Certificate of Competence’ assessment.

Entry requirements

You will need to be at least 18 years of age. Ideally you should have some experience in the industry.

What you will learn

  • You'll understand the legal requirements for chainsaw use in the workplace.
  • You'll learn how to carry out basic chainsaw maintenance safely and correctly.
  • You'll practise practical cross-cutting operations to industry standards.
  • You'll identify the risks involved in chainsaw work and how to control them.
  • You'll learn what personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and how to use it.

How you will learn

Training is delivered on-site at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus. You'll learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practical sessions. Assessment is by an industry-compliant Certificate of Competence assessment covering both knowledge and practical skills. You'll need to demonstrate safe and competent chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting to pass.

What you will need to bring

You'll need to bring your own personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes a chainsaw helmet with integrated ear defenders and face visor, protective gloves, chainsaw trousers (Type C all-round leg protection is recommended), and chainsaw safety boots. A personal first-aid kit with a large-wound dressing is also recommended. All PPE should be CE marked. Contact Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus to confirm anything else you need before you start.
