What you will learn

  • You'll learn BSL vocabulary for everyday topics including greetings, family, work, and numbers.
  • You'll develop fingerspelling skills to spell out names and unfamiliar words.
  • You'll practise BSL grammar and sentence structure.
  • You'll build conversational skills to communicate with Deaf people in common situations.
  • You'll understand Deaf culture and the role of BSL as a language.

How you will learn

Learning is classroom-based, with face-to-face tuition from a BSL tutor. You'll practise signing in class through interactive exercises and conversation. Assessment for the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is through a formal final assessment. City Lit also offers a non-assessed route if you prefer to study without an exam, in which case you'll receive a certificate of attendance rather than the qualification.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. City Lit will confirm anything else you need before you start.
