About this course

Level 1 British Sign Language Course in Ilkeston. Classes run at Derby College Ilkeston Campus, part-time during the day. The course runs over 30 weeks. You'll learn to take part in everyday conversations in BSL, give and follow simple directions, and describe familiar topics using sign. No formal qualifications are needed to join. You'll need sufficient manual dexterity, sight, and facial movement to produce and receive BSL. The centre will carry out an initial assessment to confirm the course is the right fit.

Who this course is for

**This course may be free if you earn less than £25,000p.a. Other learners may receive a 50% fee reduction. In addition, we will fully fund up to two learners per course who are deaf or hearing impaired.** This course is for anyone who wishes to be able to communicate in BSL to cover everyday topics.  You will learn how to take part in everyday conversations in BSL, to give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL, and to follow descriptions around familiar topics.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but learners should have an interest in learning British Sign Language and a willingness to work in small groups.Student will need to have sufficient manual dexterity, sight and facial movement to produce and receive BSL.

How you will learn

Classes are delivered face-to-face at Derby College Ilkeston Campus. You'll practise signing in small groups, which is central to how BSL is learned. Assessment is practical and based on your ability to communicate in BSL across everyday topics. Your tutor will observe your signing and your ability to receive and respond to signed communication.
