About this course

Free Teaching Assistant Course Level 1 in Northallerton. Classes run at Richmond Adult Learning and Skills Service, one evening a week over 8 weeks.

The course is free for adults aged 19 or over who meet the funding criteria. You'll explore what it means to work in a school, covering topics such as safeguarding, child development, supporting learning, and the roles of school staff. This NCFE Award gives you a grounding in the school environment before you step into a classroom role.

You'll finish with a Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools.

Who this course is for

This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school setting including: young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll explore the roles and responsibilities of teaching assistants and other school staff.
  • You'll learn about safeguarding and child protection in a school setting.
  • You'll understand how children develop and how this shapes learning.
  • You'll discover how to support pupils with different needs, including those with special educational needs.
  • You'll examine how schools are organised and how they communicate with families.
  • You'll build awareness of professional behaviour and boundaries in a school environment.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom sessions one evening a week. The course uses a mix of tutor-led discussion, group activities, and written tasks. Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence and short written assignments that you build up during the 8 weeks. There is no formal exam.
