Initially students learn the core knowledge for the Education and Childcare sector. This includes consideration of the following 12 aspects:
- Wider context of education and childcare - Child development - Supporting education - Safeguarding - Managing behaviour - Use of observation and assessment - Equality and diversity - Special educational needs and disability - English as an additional language - Working with parents, families and carers - Working with others - Reflective practice.
In year two there are specialisms that can be followed. The specialist content ensures students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve competence in this area.
Early Years & Childcare Specialism This includes showing competence of the knowledge and skills of following performance outcomes:
- Support and promote children’s play, development and early education - Develop relationships with children to facilitate their development - Plan, provide and review care, play and educational opportunities to enable children to progress - Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children - Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, carers and other professionals to support children’s development - This specialism is full and relevant for childcare ratios.
