Level 5 Certificate in Education in Leicester. Classes run at Leicester College St. Margaret's Campus, part-time on Mondays during the day.

The course runs over two years and covers teaching, learning, and assessment in the further education and skills sector. You'll study planning and preparing lessons, understanding how people learn, and developing your skills as a teacher, trainer, or tutor. The course is validated and certificated by De Montfort University. Entry requires significant industry experience or a Level 3 qualification in your specialist subject.

You'll finish with a Level 5 Certificate in Education.

Who this course is for

This course will introduce you to aspects of teaching, learning, and assessment to enable you to develop your work as a teacher, trainer, or tutor. It is perfect for those working or wanting to work with students who are aged 16 or over, including areas such as sixth form, further education, offender learning, and adult and community education.

After completing the course, you will be eligible to apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills status).

The level 5 Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills) is available to candidates who have significant industrial experience and/or a minimum level 3 qualification in their specialist teaching area.

Over the two years, you will study five core modules which include two teaching practice components and a further 2 optional modules, to establish knowledge whilst developing your practical skills associated with teaching, learning, and assessment within the further education and skills sector.

The course is validated and certificated by De Montfort University. Applicants who intend to teach in high priority subject areas may be eligible for a Department for Education bursary. Please see the Additional Costs section below.

If you join the course in September 2025, you will attend college on Wednesdays.

How you will learn

You'll attend weekly classroom sessions at St. Margaret's Campus on Mondays, from 9:30am to 3:00pm. Learning combines taught sessions with practical teaching experience in your own workplace or placement setting. Assessment includes written assignments and observed teaching practice. The course is validated and certificated by De Montfort University.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Leicester College St. Margaret's Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start. You will need access to a teaching environment where you can carry out observed practice as part of the course.
