About this course

Free Level 3 Site Carpentry Course in Rotherham. Classes run at Rotherham College, full-time during the day. This site carpentry course typically takes one year to complete. You'll develop the practical skills carpenters use on construction sites, from first and second fix work through to more complex joinery tasks. The City and Guilds Level 3 site carpentry qualification is the level that carpenters need to progress toward a CSCS skilled-worker card. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm this is the right level for you.

Who this course is for

This course is for you if you want to get practical skills to work as a bricklayer. You may be able to go directly onto this level 2 qualification if you have the right skills and entry qualifications. The course is particularly suitable if you've already got a level 1 bricklaying qualification or you have some experience. Youll need good basic maths skills, enjoy working with your hands and like being part of a team.

Entry requirements

2 to 3 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, including English and maths or equivalent Functional Skills qualifications. A level 1 qualification in brickwork or craft masonry, or relevant work experience is also acceptable.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop first fix carpentry skills, including timber framing, floor joists, and stud partitions.
  • You'll carry out second fix work such as fitting doors, skirting boards, and architraves.
  • You'll learn to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • You'll use and maintain a range of hand tools and power tools safely.
  • You'll apply health and safety practices relevant to construction sites.
  • You'll work with different timber materials and understand their properties and uses.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, hands-on sessions in the workshop alongside classroom-based theory. Assessment combines practical observations of your carpentry work with written assignments and tests. You'll build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your skills and knowledge across the units covered in the qualification.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Rotherham College will confirm anything else you need before you start.
