About this course

Free Level 3 IB Maths Applications and Interpretation SL Course in Dartford. Classes run at The Leigh Academy, full-time during the day, over two years. This IB maths applications and interpretation SL qualification focuses on mathematics in context, covering topics used in real modelling and data analysis. You'll also study calculus and statistics as part of a solid pre-university maths foundation. Entry requires five or more GCSEs at grades 4 to 9, including a grade 5 in Mathematics.

Who this course is for

Subject Aims:

This course recognises the increasing role that mathematics and technology play in a diverse range of fields in a data-rich world. As such, it emphasises the meaning of mathematics in context by focusing on topics that are often used as applications or in mathematical modelling. To give this understanding a firm base, this course also includes topics that are traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course such as calculus and statistics. The course makes extensive use of technology to allow students to explore and construct mathematical models. Mathematics Applications and Interpretation will develop mathematical thinking, often in the context of a practical problem and using technology to justify conjectures. Students who choose the course should enjoy seeing mathematics used in real-world contexts and to solve real-world problems.

Course Content:

There are five topics and within these topics there are sub-topics. The five topics are:

  • number and algebra
  • functions
  • geometry and trigonometry
  • probability and statistics
  • calculus

Entry requirements

5+ GCSE grades 9-4, Grade 5 in Mathematics

What you will learn

  • You'll apply mathematics to real-world contexts and data-rich problems.
  • You'll study mathematical modelling and how it's used across different fields.
  • You'll develop your understanding of statistics and data analysis.
  • You'll learn calculus as part of a pre-university mathematics foundation.
  • You'll use technology as an integral tool throughout your mathematical work.
  • You'll interpret and communicate mathematical results clearly and accurately.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based lessons at The Leigh Academy, combining taught sessions with mathematical investigation and problem-solving. Assessment for the IB maths applications and interpretation SL qualification includes written examinations and an internal assessment, which is an individual mathematical exploration. The internal assessment is completed during the course and counts toward your final grade alongside the external exams.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. The Leigh Academy will confirm anything else you need before you start.
