About this course

Free Level 3 EPA for Standard ST0400 Workboat Crewmember Course in Whitby. Classes run at Whitby and District Fishing Industry Training School. This is the end-point assessment for the Workboat Crewmember apprenticeship standard. Workboat crew work in small teams on vessels including tugs, pilot boats, and crew transfer vessels, operating in environments such as offshore windfarm construction, port services, inland waterways, and towage. You'll need to hold Level 2 English and Maths before sitting the assessment, and you must pass the MCA ENG1 medical. The course runs over 24 months.

Who this course is for

Workboat crew members are part of a small team, typically 2-3 personnel, working on a wide variety of specialist vessels ranging from tugs and multi-purpose workboats to fast pilot boats and crew transfer vessels taking personnel out to vessels or installations offshore. Workboats operate in varying marine environments such as construction of offshore windfarms, providing a range of services within a port or inland waterways, including surveys and towage. In addition, they may act as support vessels in major salvage operations and wreck removal. These vessels are typically less than 24m in length with accommodation for up to 5 persons.

Entry requirements

Every apprentice without exception will need to pass the MCA’s strict ENG1 medical requirements. This test includes, but is not limited to, severe deafness or difficulty communicating by radio or telephone, eyesight or colour vision that does not meet standards, and conditions that limit mobility and stamina. Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking their end-point-assessment.

What you will learn

  • You'll demonstrate safe working practices on a range of specialist workboats and marine vessels.
  • You'll show competence in vessel operations across varied marine environments, including offshore and inland waterways.
  • You'll apply knowledge of towage, survey support, and port service operations.
  • You'll prove your ability to work effectively as part of a small crew team.
  • You'll meet the standards required for crew transfer and pilot boat operations.
  • You'll evidence your understanding of marine safety and emergency procedures.

This is an end-point assessment, not a taught course. It assesses the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you've developed during your apprenticeship. You must have achieved Level 2 English and Maths and passed the MCA ENG1 medical before you can sit the assessment.
