Criminology explores crime from a social perspective. You'll study the causes of crime, how crime affects society, and what motivates criminal behaviour. The course also looks at how the criminal justice system responds to crime. You'll need five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths, to join.

You'll finish with a WJEC Diploma in Criminology.

Who this course is for

This is an applied general subject. This means that it can help prepare you for university but it is also suited to those students who do not wish to study further beyond sixth form. Criminology is the study of crime from a social perspective. It looks at a number of factors such as the causes of crime, how crime impacts society and the criminals involved in the execution of crimes. Criminologists seek to better understand what motivates the criminal to act in a criminal manner.

Entry requirements

Students will require the equivalent of 5 GCSE grades at 9-4 including a grade 4 for English and Maths. An interest in criminal justice and current affairs is very desirable. In order to achieve in the exams you will need good written skills, hardworking with a positive work ethic. Likewise, for the controlled assessments you need to be self-disciplined, organised and committed and willing to work hard in and out of lessons.
