The course covers the technical and creative skills used across media production. You'll explore digital tools, visual design, video production, and storytelling for screen. Units are developed with industry in mind, so the content reflects how media professionals actually work. You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Diploma in Creative Media Practice.

Who this course is for

This course is an introduction to the wide range of technical and creative skills required to work as an artist or designer in the videogame industry. The Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification is equivalent to three A-Levels, and the unique course content has been designed and developed in conjunction with a range of game studios located within the games development hotbed known as ‘Silicon Spa’. Primarily aimed at those with an interest in art and computing, the course covers theory and software skills relating to 3D modelling, animation, level and game design, concept art, and visual effects. You will also learn the fundamental traditional art skills such as drawing and painting, colour theory, and life drawing, that underpin the more digital disciplines. Finally you will learn how the games industry works, and complete several group projects to develop your team working, project management, and critical self evaluation skills. You will have opportunity to work closely with local game studios and engage with them directly through live briefs, game testing sessions, and studio visits. You will also be able to work on exciting games development projects in collaboration with our Higher Education BA(Hons) Games Art students. This course is delivered as two qualifications, each a year long (usually a national or 90 credit diploma in Year 1 and the extended diploma in Year 2). Students who are 18 years old when they start Year 1 will therefore be 19 at the start of Year 2 and may be subject to fees for the Year 2 qualification. All learners will need to successfully complete the Year 1 qualification to be able to progress to the Year 2 qualification.
