If you're 19 or over, fees may apply depending on your prior qualifications and personal circumstances. You'll train in fully equipped workshops, learning to diagnose and repair faults across all major vehicle systems. The course covers engine faults, transmission, drive line, chassis, and both electronic and non-electronic diagnostic methods. Entry requirements are discussed at interview, so contact the college if you're unsure whether you qualify.

Who this course is for

Designed to introduce you to modern vehicle diagnostic techniques, this course will help you to identify faults on all major vehicle systems. Throughout your course, you will develop your knowledge and skills in core systems before investigating common faults, causes and how to identify them. Based in our fully equipped workshops, you will also learn electronic and non-electronic methods of fault diagnosis, using modern equipment.

Entry requirements

Ideally at least 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 or A*-C including English and Maths or a Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, but this is subject to discussion at your interview. If you haven't already achieved a GCSE grade 5 or grade C in English or Maths, then you will study either GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths alongside your other qualifications.

What you will learn

  • You'll diagnose faults on light vehicle engines and learn how to rectify them.
  • You'll identify and repair transmission and drive line faults.
  • You'll diagnose and rectify light vehicle chassis faults.
  • You'll diagnose and repair auxiliary electrical faults, including electronic systems.
  • You'll use modern diagnostic equipment for both electronic and non-electronic fault finding.
  • You'll develop practical skills across core vehicle systems before tackling complex fault scenarios.

How you will learn

You'll learn through hands-on practical work in fully equipped workshops, supported by classroom-based teaching. Assessment is split equally: 50% coursework and 50% exam. Coursework includes practical tasks and synoptic assessments that draw together skills from across the course. If you don't yet hold a GCSE grade 5 or grade C in English or Maths, you'll study GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths alongside the main qualification.
