About this course

Free Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport Course in Northampton. Classes run at Guilsborough Academy, full-time over two years.

You'll study anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming, and professional development in the sports industry. You also choose one optional unit from areas such as sports psychology, fitness testing, or leadership in sport. The course mixes assignment-based work with externally assessed units. You'll need five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and maths, to join.

You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport.

Who this course is for

If you are intending to pursue health, fitness or sports-related occupations in the future such as recreation management, sports development, coaching, instructing or teaching, this course is for you. It allows you to explore sport both as a performer and academically and gives you the opportunity to study a work related qualification alongside other level 3 courses such as A levels or other BTEC qualifications. The equivalent of 1 A level, it will also give you transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership and resilience that are useful for a variety of careers and higher education courses.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise leading sport sessions and develop coaching and instructing skills.
  • You'll learn how to conduct and interpret fitness tests.

How you will learn

The course uses a mix of internal and external assessment. Two units are externally assessed: one by a 90-minute test and one by a two-hour written task under exam conditions. The remaining units are assessed through assignment-based work linked to real workplace situations. You'll complete projects and practical tasks in the classroom.
