About this course

Level 3 BTEC Health and Social Care Course in King's Lynn. Classes run at Springwood Sixth Form, full-time over two years. A 16 to 19 Bursary may be available; check the school website for details.

This Pearson Edexcel BTEC covers the knowledge and skills behind health and social care practice. You'll study human development, health promotion, anatomy, and how care services are organised. The course is equivalent in size to one A Level, so you can study it alongside other Level 3 subjects. That combination opens routes into higher education as well as direct entry roles in care.

You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care.

Who this course is for

If you're thinking about a career in health and social care but not ready to commit entirely to a purely work related course, the National Extended Certificate gives you an introduction to the sector whilst allowing you to study other subjects alongside it. Equivalent in size to one A Level, if you take it as part of a programme of study that includes other work related or academic Level 3 qualifications it can help you to move on to to a wide range of higher education and training opportunities.

Entry requirements

To gain a place in the Sixth Form all students will ideally have at least grade 4 in both an English and Maths and at least three other GCSEs, or Level 2 qualifications, at grade 5 or above. Additional subject criteria: A merit at GCSE in Health & Social care (if taken).

What you will learn

  • You'll explore human growth and development across the life stages.
  • You'll study how the body works, including anatomy and physiology.
  • You'll learn about health promotion and factors that affect wellbeing.
  • You'll examine how health and social care services are structured and funded.
  • You'll develop understanding of person-centred values and safeguarding principles.
  • You'll build communication skills used in care settings.
  • You'll investigate current issues and challenges facing the health and social care sector.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom lessons, case studies, and research tasks. Assessment is a mix of internally assessed assignments and externally set exams, depending on the unit. Assignments are marked by your teachers and moderated by Pearson Edexcel. You'll build a portfolio of work over the two years alongside sitting written exams.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Springwood Sixth Form will confirm anything else you need before you start.
