About this course

Level 3 Art and Design Course in Darlington. Classes run full-time at Darlington College, five days a week during the day. The course is free if you're 16 to 18 years old. If you're 19 or over, fees may apply, though help may be available. You'll need four GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English or Maths, to be considered. The course runs for 34 weeks and covers art, design and communication across a range of creative disciplines.

Who this course is for

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply, however help may be available.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs (or vocational equivalents) at Grade 4 or higher, including English or Maths. We will request a school or college report to demonstrate your good attendance and engagement. Progressing students require good attendance & engagement within English and Maths lessons.

  • You'll develop skills in drawing, mark-making and visual communication.
  • You'll explore a range of materials, techniques and processes across 2D and 3D work.
  • You'll build a personal creative practice through project-based work.
  • You'll learn how to research and develop ideas from initial concept to finished outcome.
  • You'll study design principles and how they apply to real creative briefs.
  • You'll produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative development.
  • You'll reflect on your own practice and evaluate your progress throughout the course.

How you will learn

You'll learn through studio-based practice, projects and creative briefs. Assessment is portfolio-based. You'll gather evidence of your work throughout the year, showing your creative process from initial ideas through to finished pieces. There are no written exams. Tutors will review your progress at key points and give feedback to help you develop your work.
