About this course

Free Level 3 Applied Science Course in Workington. Classes run at Energy Coast UTC, full-time during the day over two years. You'll study scientific principles and practical techniques across areas including food science, human biology, and related fields. The course is designed for learners aged 16 or over who want to apply science knowledge in ways that connect to real work and further study. You'll need at least grade 4 in five GCSE subjects, including English and Maths, to be considered for a place.

Who this course is for

The Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science has been developed for learners aged 16+, who enjoy the sciences and want to learn how to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding in ways that are relevant to work. The main purpose of the qualification is to develop the scientific principles and practical techniques which, when taken with other complementary science-based qualifications, will prepare learners to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to food, human or environmental science. They will learn to carry out experiments safely and accurately when testing products to yield results that can be used to inform the next stage in a scientific process. Learners will also have the opportunity to collect and analyse primary data. This will better prepare them to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to laboratory science such as Life Sciences, Biological Science and Environmental Science. The Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science is the same size as one GCE A level. The Extended Certificate in Applied Science also complements other qualifications as it provides the practical laboratory skills that employers and universities are looking for.

Every learner will study five mandatory units which focus on the laboratory techniques and scientific principles: Science Fundamentals, Laboratory Techniques, Control of Hazards in the Laboratory, Product Testing Techniques, Microbiology
