Who this course is for
This course is intended for learners aged 19+ who wish to progress into employment or further study in the animal care sector, or for learners who are currently working in the sector, in paid or unpaid employment. Accredited by ABC Awards, the qualification has been developed in consultation with employers, providers and Lantra, in order to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice.

You'll develop hands-on animal handling and care techniques across a range of species.
You'll learn how to monitor animal health and recognise signs of illness or distress.
You'll study animal behaviour and how to respond to it safely and appropriately.

You'll learn how to maintain animal housing, equipment and hygiene standards.
You'll build knowledge of nutrition and feeding requirements for different animals.
How you will learn
You'll learn through classroom sessions and practical, hands-on work at Writtle College. Assessment is based on a combination of practical observation, written assignments and portfolio evidence gathered throughout the year. Your progress will be assessed against industry-relevant standards developed in consultation with employers and Lantra.
