About this course

Free Level 2 Painting and Decorating Course in Penzance. Classes run at Penwith College, full-time during the day. This painting and decorating qualification covers the skills and knowledge used on real construction projects: applying paint, hanging wallpaper, and preparing and protecting surfaces including plaster, metal, and wood. The course runs for one year. You'll need four GCSEs at grade D or above to enrol; if you don't have grade C or above in maths and English, you'll study Functional Skills alongside the main course.

Who this course is for

This Level 2 qualification in Painting and Decorating is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the construction industry specifically as a crafts person in painting and decorating. A painter and decorator has the skills and knowledge to use a range of coverings such as paint and wallpaper to enhance and protect surfaces such as plaster, metal and wood, and plays an important part of any construction team.

Entry requirements

The basic requirement is four GCSEs at grade D and above. If you do not gain grade Cs in maths and English Language you will need to retake them or a Functional Skill at College alongside your main course

What you will learn

  • You'll prepare surfaces including plaster, metal, and wood for decoration.
  • You'll apply paint and other coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
  • You'll hang wallpaper and other wall coverings accurately and neatly.
  • You'll identify and use the correct materials and tools for different surfaces and finishes.
  • You'll work safely on site, following health and safety requirements.
  • You'll understand how painting and decorating fits into the wider construction process.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom teaching and practical, hands-on sessions at Penwith College. Assessment combines practical tasks, where you demonstrate decorating skills directly, with written or knowledge-based assessments. Your progress is assessed throughout the course rather than in a single final exam.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Penwith College will confirm anything else you need before you start.
