About this course

Free Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Course. Study online. You work through the course at your own pace, which makes it easier to fit around existing commitments. The course covers child development from birth to 7 years, with a focus on applied knowledge for the 0 to 5 age range. You'll need to be working, volunteering, or on placement in a childcare setting, as part of your assessment takes place in a real working environment. The course typically takes 6 months.

Who this course is for

The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to 7 years of age with applied knowledge in the early years (0-5 years). Upon successful completion of this qualification learners can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or continue to study for a Level 3 Diploma holding Early Years Educator status.

Entry requirements

You will need to be working, volunteering or have a practical placement in a childcare setting, with children aged between birth to 5 years, as an important part of the assessment process involves evaluating skills in real working situations.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop knowledge of child development from birth to 7 years.
  • You'll understand how to support babies and young children's learning and play.
  • You'll learn how to observe and assess children's progress in an early years setting.
  • You'll explore safeguarding principles and how to keep children safe.
  • You'll understand how to support children's health, wellbeing, and physical care needs.
  • You'll learn how to work in partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals.
  • You'll apply your knowledge in a real childcare setting as part of your assessment.

How you will learn

You study online and work through the course material at your own pace. A key part of the assessment involves being observed and evaluated in a real childcare setting, so you must be working, volunteering, or on a practical placement with children aged birth to 5 years. Assessment combines online coursework with evidence gathered from your workplace practice.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Hartlepool Learning, Work and Skills will confirm anything else you need before you start. You will need access to a childcare setting with children aged birth to 5 years throughout the course, as workplace evidence forms part of your assessment.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Nursery practitioner: working with children aged 0 to 5 in a nursery
  • Nursery assistant: supporting qualified staff in an early years setting
  • Childminder assistant: helping a registered childminder at home or in the community
  • Pre-school assistant: supporting children's learning in a pre-school setting
  • Early years key worker: taking responsibility for a small group of children
  • Crèche worker: providing childcare in leisure, retail, or community settings

What you could study next

The natural next step is a Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator). This is the qualification recognised in statutory staffing ratios for nursery work in England, so it opens up more senior roles and greater responsibility in a setting. Some practitioners also go on to study foundation degrees or degrees in Early Childhood Studies, which can lead to teaching or leadership roles.
