About this course

Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Music Industry Skills in Leicester. Classes run at Leicester College Abbey Park Campus, full-time during the day. This one-year course covers the creative and technical side of music technology, from recording studio theory and practice to computer music production and composition. You'll work in sound studios and Mac Suites, and collaborate with music students on recording projects. The course is built around hands-on learning, and you'll need to commit to at least five hours of independent practice each week. Entry requires four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English.

Who this course is for

This course offers a very practical approach to what is involved in being a modern musician. You will learn the skills and knowledge you need to pursue a career in the modern music industry.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities. For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn recording studio theory and hands-on studio practice.
  • You'll develop skills in computer music production using Mac Suites and professional software.
  • You'll study the music industry, including how it operates commercially and creatively.
  • You'll explore contextual studies to understand music technology in a broader cultural setting.
  • You'll practise composition techniques relevant to sound engineering and production.
  • You'll collaborate with music students on live recording projects at least twice a year.
  • You'll build the technical knowledge needed for roles in radio, TV, film sound, and studio work.

How you will learn

Learning is classroom-based and highly practical, centred on Leicester College Abbey Park Campus's sound studios and Mac Suites. You'll work on recording projects with fellow students and complete independent practice outside class. Assessment is through coursework and practical assignments, as is standard for Pearson Edexcel BTEC qualifications at this level. You'll also take part in activities to develop personal skills, and work experience or placement is timetabled for 16 to 19 year olds.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Leicester College Abbey Park Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start. Be prepared to commit to at least five hours of independent practice each week outside of class.
